Hair Transplant & What Are the Options
DHI (Dihydrotestosterone), the hormone behind hair loss, works in various ways to damage and destroy hair follicles. In the earlier stages, thinning is triggered which results in a reduced volume or hair density. In case no effective measures are taken to stop the DHI mechanism, a number of hair follicles are damaged to the extent that it culminates into baldness. Hair loss is a worldwide issue, formerly believed to affect those in the 50s and above, but it is now commonly experienced by younger males and females.
Possible causes of hair loss
There are various factors that weaken hair follicles hence launching a path to baldness. Apart from genetics that trigger androgenetic alopecia, other causes of hair loss include;
- Acute stress disorder (ASD)
- Emotional Stress
- Autoimmune disorders
- Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS)
- Escalated vitamin A levels in the body
- Seborrheic dermatitis
- Nutritional deficiencies
- Hormonal imbalances
- Medications like Antidepressants and blood thinners
- Strict diets
- Lack of enough proteins
- Tight Hairstyles
- Scalp Psoriasis
- Vitamin B deficiency
- Use of Anabolic steroids
Hair Transplantation to Regrow Hair
Presently, hair transplant in Malaysia is becoming the latest trend for combating baldness in all age groups and genders. The technique works by harvesting healthy hair follicles from one side of the scalp and aesthetically implanting them in the bald or thinning region. As per the Norwood scale, seven levels of baldness (hair loss) are depicted and depending on one’s extent of hair loss, the hair transplant process is planned.
Hair Transplant Approaches
Due to technology advancements, there are various hair transplant approaches suitable for both males and females.
- FUT (Follicular Unit Transplantation)
Also termed as the strip method, the FUT hair transplant approach is mostly utilized in patients with severe baldness. With this approach, scalpel blades are used to extract the hair-bearing skin (strip) from the donor region (back of the head). To deliver aesthetic results, the strip size is minimized as much as possible and while stitching the wound, the surgeon aims at minimizing the appearance of a scar.
The strip is then divided into hair grafts which contain 1 or 2 hair follicles after which they are implanted in the bald region.
- FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction)
It is probably the most sought hair transplant approach since it is minimally invasive and results in better aesthetic results. With the FUE Hair Transplant in Malaysia, single hair follicles are meticulously harvested from the donor region of the scalp or the body, such as the beard, hands, chest and legs with the help of a micro-punch.
These individual hair follicles are then implanted in the already made tiny incisions in the bald region.
- Direct Hair Implant Method (DHI)
This method allows a surgeon to conduct the hair transplant procedure without shaving a patient’s scalp. It is quick and praised for delivering natural results. With the DHI method, individual hair follicles are directly removed from the donor region to the bald region. There are no stitches, scalpel blades, or strips involved.
It is one of the best forms of hair transplant approaches worldwide performed using the FUE method, but having implanted the hair follicles in the bald region, a serum derived from the patient’s blood is injected into the recipient region to boost the hair transplant results. The serum specifically consists of enriched platelet-rich plasma that stimulates a natural hair growth.
Hair Transplant Cost
Basically, the hair transplant cost differs from one patient to another, generally as per the type of hair transplant technique used and the number of hair follicles harvested. In addition, the number of sittings required to complete the hair transplant procedure may require a lump sum to eliminate baldness.
